REVIVING SPAIN'S WOOL HERITAGE

For centuries, wool was Spain’s “White Gold”, a fiber deeply woven into the country’s cultural and economic fabric. Once a global leader in wool production, Spain now faces a crisis—90% of its wool remains unsold or is treated as waste, and the infrastructure to process it has nearly disappeared.
The Tejiendo Redes initiative, launched as part of the Madrid Design Festival 2025, aims to bring awareness, spark innovation, and revive the Spanish wool industry. With sustainability at its core, the project highlights wool’s natural, renewable, and biodegradable properties, offering a viable alternative to synthetic fibers, which dominate today’s fast fashion market.
The Wool Crisis in Spain
Despite being the largest wool producer in the EU, Spain’s wool industry has been reduced to a fraction of what it once was. Over the past 50 years:
• Sheep populations have drastically declined, from 23 million in 1970 to just 15 million in 2022.
• Over 95% of the country’s wool-washing facilities have closed, leaving only three remaining.
• More than 85% of Spain’s wool-related businesses have disappeared, leading to the loss of invaluable artisanal skills.
Meanwhile, cheap synthetic fibers dominate the textile industry, harming both the environment and local economies. Without intervention, Spain risks losing not just an industry, but an entire cultural legacy.
A Path to Revival: Innovation & Collaboration
To combat this crisis, Tejiendo Redes is working to reconnect designers, artisans, farmers, and institutions to restore the wool industry through:
- Sustainable Processing & Local Production – Encouraging investment in wool-washing facilities and promoting circular economies that keep production within Spain.
- Education & Awareness – Launching public campaigns to highlight the environmental and economic benefits of wool.
- New Design Applications – Exploring innovative uses for wool in fashion, interior design, architecture, and acoustic insulation.
- Strategic Partnerships – Collaborating with businesses and policymakers to create incentives for sustainable wool production.

How L'Envers contributes
Since day 1 each L’Envers piece has been knitted & sewn in small family workshops with great know-how in Spain, where we live, and made of pure raw materials that are selected carefully from French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian spinning mills. In particular, we work exclusively with 100% Spanish merino wool, from sheep raised in Extremadura and yarn spun in Cataluna.
Working at a local scale makes it possible to foster strong and individual relationships with our artisans, and limit the impact we have on the environment. We are proud to give a voice back to local hand-crafted fashion.
Why It Matters
This commitment to Spanish merino wool and natural materials as a whole is about sustainability, heritage, and the future of ethical fashion. By choosing wool over synthetic fibers, we support rural economies, biodiversity, and a more responsible textile industry.
Now is the time to act, collaborate, and invest in a material that embodies both tradition and innovation. Will Spain reclaim its place as a global leader in wool, or will this heritage fade into history?
Let’s weave the future together.
